Photographer Grigory Yaroshenko and cameraman Viktor Yaroshenko as part of the 64th and 65th Russian Antarctic Expedition organized by the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute of St. Petersburg are traveling thousands of miles documenting the lives of contemporary polar explorers.
Antarctica is the coldest, most remote, and inaccessible continent on earth. It has the strongest winds and is generally unsuitable for life. Only penguins and seals are its native habitats. The development of natural resources is prohibited, any territorial disputes are “frozen”.
There, scientists study climate and observe the universe.
Despite extreme weather conditions, polar nights, and other obstacles its regions have been mapped and visited by geologists, geophysicists, biologists, and other scientists who live there in severe conditions. Totally isolated during winter, their life resembles one in outer space. Adventurous and courageous they prove that being a polar explorer is a calling.
So what is so attractive in this barren land? And what is the antarctic virus?
In a series of interviews combined with unique footage of Antarctica and observations of the daily life of polar explorers, we try to find answers to these questions.
